Vice President JD Vance marked Halloween on Oct. 31 by dressing as Albus Dumbledore from the “Harry Potter” series and holding his newborn son, who was dressed as the house-elf Dobby. Vance shared a video of the costumes on social media.
In the video, Vance stands on a porch decorated for Halloween wearing a long silver-gray wig, a pointed hat and an ornate, glittering robe. His baby wears a knit cap with large ears modeled after Dobby.
Introducing the costumes, Vance joked that he was “Vice President Dumbledore” alongside “little Dobby the elf.” He wished viewers a happy Halloween and told them to have fun, stay safe and eat plenty of candy.
Vance also shared a photo of his family in costumes inspired by the series. His wife, Usha Vance, wore a black witch’s hat, while the couple’s other children dressed as characters including Harry Potter, a spider and a dragon, along with other figures from the world of Hogwarts.
The costumes drew mixed reactions online. On X, some users mocked Vance’s Dumbledore outfit and questioned its resemblance to the Hogwarts headmaster. One commenter called it the worst Dumbledore costume they had seen; another said it looked nothing like the character.
Responses on Instagram were more positive. Followers praised the family’s costumes and shared Halloween wishes, including one commenter who said they loved the outfits and wished the vice president and his family a happy Halloween.
