Federal authorities are investigating the crash of a private jet in Greenacres, in South Florida, on Sunday, Nov. 1. Nine people died, and officials had not released the victims’ names. The crash triggered a major explosion and a fire that damaged at least one residence in the trailer park.
The aircraft was preliminarily identified as a Learjet 60. Initial reports indicated that it may have struck a tree and brought down power lines before crashing into the residential area. Images shared on social media showed a large crater, burning debris and a tall column of flames.
The crash occurred shortly after 1 p.m. near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North in Palm Beach County. All lanes of Military Trail were closed between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office urged drivers to avoid the area and use alternate routes.
Preliminary information identified the aircraft as a Learjet 60, a business jet valued at approximately $2 million. The crash also affected residents of a neighboring community. About 600 people had to leave their homes and spend the night in shelters.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy expressed condolences to the victims’ families and loved ones. He said authorities were closely monitoring the crash and would share updates when more information became available. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the circumstances of the crash.
