An audio recording released by LiveATC, a website that streams communications between pilots and air traffic controllers, captured the final moments of a private jet that crashed in southern Florida on Sunday, Nov. 1. All nine people aboard died.
The recording indicates that the pilot first reported moderate turbulence and said he was trying to find more stable flying conditions. Less than a minute later, he declared an emergency using the international distress call “Mayday” and reported that the aircraft was descending at 10,000 feet per minute. The rate later reached 22,000 feet per minute.
During the exchange, the pilot said the aircraft was going to hit the ground. About 35 seconds after the first distress call, the final words captured in the recording were, “We’re out of time.”
The crash occurred at about 12:50 p.m. local time. The jet had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in Texas and was headed to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas. The impact sparked a large fire, and emergency crews were sent to the scene.
Authorities had not identified the nine people aboard. They also had not said how many were passengers and how many were crew members. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, commenting on the crash, said the aircraft looked like a missile falling.
