Secretary of State Marco Rubio denied he intends to leave the Trump administration to run for president in 2028. “My plan has always been to work for Trump through the end of his term,” he told The New York Times on Thursday, Nov. 5. Asked about reports that he might depart, Rubio said, “Honestly, I don’t know where these things come from.”
U.S. media had reported that Rubio was considering leaving the administration even before the midterm election results. The prospect reportedly gained traction after the vote. Republicans lost their majorities in both the Senate and the House, and Democrats won the election, according to the report.
The Independent reported that Rubio was one of five members of Trump’s Cabinet who planned to leave the administration after the Democrats’ victory. An unnamed source told the newspaper Rubio was currently the leading contender for the Republican presidential nomination and was clearly ahead of Vice President JD Vance. The source added that Rubio could not run while serving as secretary of state and that his association with the administration could hurt his chances.
The report also said Trump’s poor standing with the public could weigh on Rubio, as well as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Rubio represents the administration’s more ideological wing, which is aligned with the MAGA movement. As secretary of state, he has been at the forefront of U.S. relations with Latin America.
