Democrat Aaron Ford was elected governor of Nevada on Wednesday, Nov. 4, defeating Republican Joe Lombardo and becoming the first Black governor elected in the state. Ford is Nevada’s attorney general. His victory came amid gains by Democrats in this year’s U.S. midterm elections.

The midterms included contests for one-third of the U.S. Senate, every seat in the House of Representatives and governorships in 36 states. Democrats won majorities in both chambers of Congress and secured more governorships than either party, according to the source report.

The results reshape the political landscape and could make it harder for President Donald Trump to advance his agenda, as his party will have a smaller base of support in Congress. Ford’s win in Nevada was one of the Democratic victories in the elections.

Lombardo, the incumbent governor, had Trump’s direct support during the race. Trump appeared with Lombardo at campaign rallies in Nevada and endorsed the Republican candidate on several occasions.
