Brazilian Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro appeared at an evangelical church service in Florida on Sunday, Nov. 2, in his first public appearance in the United States since leaving Brazil on Oct. 28. Images showed him with his brother, Eduardo Bolsonaro, his wife, Fernanda Bolsonaro, and his sister-in-law, Heloísa.
The service was held at Igreja Celeiro, which also has a location in São Paulo. Since January, the church has held services for the Brazilian community in Coral Springs, near Miami. The congregation posted a photo of pastors José Mauricio and Alice Fernandes with the Bolsonaro family on social media, saying it was honored to welcome them to Celeiro Florida House of Prayer. A portion of the sermon identified the service’s theme as the unjust imprisonment of Joseph in Egypt, a story in the biblical book of Genesis.
Flávio Bolsonaro and his family arrived in the United States at about 10:25 a.m. Brasília time on Wednesday, Oct. 28. Their private plane departed from Argentina, stopped in Ecuador, and continued to Miami, landing at Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport.
Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes had ordered Flávio Bolsonaro not to leave Brazil. On Oct. 26, at the request of the Federal Police, Moraes ordered him to surrender his passports. Moraes is overseeing a case in which the senator and lawyer Willer Tomaz are under investigation for money laundering. Flávio did not turn in his passports by the court-ordered deadline, and the Federal Police canceled the documents. He then left Brazil.
