President of the United States, Joe Biden, said this Thursday (4) that the United States must maintain its “sacred commitment” to NATO on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the international military alliance.
After his electoral rival, Republican Donald Trump, undermined the guarantee of American participation in the collective defense of members.
“We must remember that the sacred commitment we make to our allies – to defend every inch of NATO territory – also makes us safer,” Biden stressed in a statement.
Trump recently warned that he would encourage Russia to attack any member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) that does not provide sufficient defense funds.
During his presidency (2017-2021), the Republican said he would consider withdrawing the United States from the alliance because he considered that other states were not contributing their share to the organization’s budget.
Biden praised NATO’s unity over the past two years, as the alliance stepped up its military support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s “fierce invasion”, launched in late February 2022.
With the recent incorporation of Finland and Sweden, which joined as a result of the war in Ukraine, NATO is now “bigger, stronger and more determined than ever”, highlighted the Democrat.
